US markets will adjust to new investing order in week ahead

Stocks in the past week surged, with the Dow rallying 5 percent to a new high, its best gain in five years. The Dow ended Friday at 18.847, and the S&P 500 was up 3.8 percent at 2,164. The Nasdaq was up 3.7 percent, but the small-cap Russell 2000 outperformed with a more than 10 percent gain.

At the same time, US Treasury yields zipped higher, particularly at the long end. The 10-year Treasury yield jumped to 2.15 percent, the highest level since January, from a pre-election level of 1.8 percent.

Literally overnight Tuesday into Wednesday, market sentiment shifted, and so did the stocks that were in favor. Financials ripped higher, up 11.3 percent for the week on the outlook for higher rates and less regulation. That was the best week for the sector since the bull market began in 2009.

Industrials bounced nearly 8 percent, and the Industrial Select SPDR Fund ETF had its best week in five years. Health care jumped 6 percent on Trump's vow to eliminate parts of Obamacare and on relief that Hillary Clinton did not win. She was outspoken on drug pricing and viewed as negative for drugs and biotech. The IBB iShares Nasdaq Biotechnology ETF jumped 14.4 percent in its best week ever.

As US yields rose, emerging markets were also stung by a sharp jump in rates. Their currencies were slammed, especially the Mexican peso, which was down more than 10 percent on the week.

Investors will be watching out for any comments from Trump on many topics, including trade. In an interview Friday with The Wall Street Journal, he said he would potentially impose tariffs on products of companies that relocate overseas.

Oil slumped in the past week, sliding 15 percent amid supply concerns. West Texas Intermediate futures were trading just above USD 43 late Friday. The S&P energy sector, however was up 2 percent even with the breakdown in crude futures.

Markets maintain gains led by pharma shares; Lupin up 7%

Benchmark share indices continued to hold on to their gains in noon trade on Monday with Lupin emerging as the top gainer following the USFDA clearance for it Goa unit.

the S&P BSE Sensex was up 209 points at 27,483 and the Nifty50 was up 76 points at 8,506. In the broader markets, the BSE Midcap and Smallcap indices were up 1.3%-1.6% each. Market breadth was strong with 2006 gainers and 596 losers on the BSE.

Foreign institutional investors were net sellers in equities worth Rs 343 crore on Friday, as per provisional stock exchange data.

Lupin was up over 7% after the pharma major said that it has received Establishment Inspection Report (EIR) from the US health regulator for its Goa plant leading to closure of all outstanding inspections of the facility.

Among other pharma shares, Sun Pharma and Dr Reddy's Labs were up over 1.7% each. In the broader markets, Glenmark Pharma, Aurobindo Pharma, Neuland Labs, Dishman Pharma, were up over 4% each.

PNB was up over 5% post the listing of its housing finance arm.

ICICI Bank was up 1.7% ahead of its second quarter earnings due for release today.

Nifty ends below 8450, Sensex falls over 150pts; pharma bleeds

The market has ended in red for 5th consecutive day. The Sensex was down 156.13 points or 0.6 percent at 27274.15, and the Nifty slipped 51.20 points or 0.6 percent at 8433.75. About 698 shares have advanced, 2205 shares declined, and 119 shares are unchanged.

Sun Pharma, Dr Reddy's Labs, Lupin, Hero and Coal India were top losers while ITC, Wipro, M&M, HUL and ICICI Bank were losers in the Sensex. 

Larsen & Toubro dropped 2 percent after the government offloaded 1.6 percent stake in early trade.

However, ITC retained its top position in the buying list, up 4 percent after the GST panel fixed rates.
Watch and jewellery maker Titan Company missed analysts' expectations on topline and bottomline front but margin was ahead of estimates. Profit grew by 23.5 percent year-on-year to Rs 180.7 crore in the quarter ended September 2016.

Revenue during the quarter fell 0.2 percent to Rs 2,675.7 crore on yearly basis, impacted by degrowth in watch business and muted growth in jewellery segment.
